The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory has been conducting annual California Gull colony walk-throughs in the South San Francisco Bay since 1980. Each year in mid-May, biologists and volunteers enter the colony to count every California Gull nest, and by doing so, have documented the increase of California Gulls form 24 nests in 1980 to over 45,000 breeding California Gulls in 2009.
